Do you need Shopify Plus just to change your checkout?

6 min readUpdated September 2026

Short answer. If you want custom fields, checkout UI extensions or Functions, then yes — those are Plus features. If what you want is your own page, your own domain and your own payment account, Plus does not give you that either, and it is the most expensive way to find out.

What Plus adds at the checkout

Checkout UI extensions, so you can place blocks in the positions Shopify defines. Functions, so discounts, delivery options and payment methods can follow your own rules. Custom fields and validation. A wider branding API than the one in the standard editor.

It is a real set of tools and for a certain kind of business it pays for itself in a month. The question is whether your reason for looking at it is on that list.

What Plus still does not give you

The checkout is still Shopify’s page, on Shopify’s domain, running Shopify’s payment step. You can add to it; you cannot replace it. If your problem is that Shopify Payments will not take your category, or that the wallet your market uses does not appear, Plus changes nothing.

This is the part worth being blunt about, because it is where most of the money gets wasted: people buy Plus for a checkout problem that Plus was never going to solve.

The arithmetic

Shopify Plus starts around $2,300 a month on an annual commitment, with variable pricing above a revenue threshold. Set that against what you would pay to run the checkout yourself: a flat monthly fee, and your payment processing where it already is.

The honest comparison is not “Plus versus a checkout app”. It is “what am I buying the whole tier for”. If the answer includes multiple stores, launchpad, the API limits and the support, buy it. If the answer is “so I can add a field and an upsell”, you are paying a platform price for a page.

Pricing checked September 2026. Shopify does not publish a single Plus number and quotes vary by contract — treat it as an order of magnitude, not a quote.

When each option is the right one

Stay on the standard checkout if it converts and nothing about your category or your markets is fighting you. It is free, it is fast, and it is somebody else’s problem to keep up.

Move to Plus if you need the platform, not just the page — several storefronts, heavy automation, a wholesale channel, an enterprise support line.

Run your own checkout if the page itself is the constraint: you need your own payment account, your own domain, upsells before and after payment, and the buyer data that comes with them.

Questions people actually ask

How much is Shopify Plus?
Around $2,300 a month on an annual commitment, moving to variable pricing above a revenue threshold. Shopify quotes per contract, so the number you are given may differ.
Can I get post-purchase upsells without Plus?
Shopify supports a post-purchase page through apps on standard plans, with limits on what it can contain and which payment methods support it. Running your own checkout removes those limits, because the page after payment is yours.
Does Plus let me use a different payment processor?
Plus does not change who underwrites you. If your category is the problem, the plan is not the lever.
