Onyx vs Stripe
These are not the same thing, and anyone telling you otherwise is selling something. Stripe moves money. Onyx replaces the page where the buyer decides.
On Shopify the distinction matters twice: Shopify charges an extra fee on most plans when you process through a third-party gateway instead of Shopify Payments, and Stripe’s own checkout cannot be dropped into the Shopify flow as a replacement page.

When Stripe is the right answer
If you are building your own storefront and need a processor with deep APIs, Stripe is excellent and Onyx is not a substitute. On Shopify, the question is different: you still need a processor, and Onyx is what sits in front of it.
